Melter

Melters are used to fully melt sugar crystals by mixing them in a solution medium. As operation is automated, the temperature and dry substance content are kept at constant levels, so all sugar mass flows fed into the melter are processed into a homogeneous liquor. The resulting stable mixture is then discharged and available for the downstream process steps.

Functions

Melting different sugar flows

Sugar crystals from a range of sources – such as raw sugar, recycled sugar, sugar from different crystallisation products or magmatized sugar – are dissolved in the closed melting tank until the melt is free from crystals. Among the solution mediums used are sweet water, hot water, juice, liquor and run-off.

Suspending & mixing

Stirrers suspend the crystals, preventing caking on the bottom of the melter and increasing the contact surfaces between the sugar and the solution medium. This speeds up the melting process.

Temperature control & colour stability

Higher temperatures accelerate the melting process, but also lead to more colour formation. The melter temperature is therefore limited to around 70 to 75 °C by circulation through a heat exchanger.

Solution medium feed control

Any vapour generated can be extracted, while the dry substance content is set at the melter outflow to control the solution medium feed: only the amount required by the process is added.

Level control & tank design

The final melter compartment serves for level control. It has no stirrers, because the sugar is fully melted at this point. Designed as a U-shape trough with a flat cover, the melter provides a rectangular inlet for a chute or crystalline sugar.

High dry substance content for efficient downstream processes

With the dry substance content of the liquor at a maximum, less water evaporation is required for downstream evaporation and crystallisation, saving both energy and time.

Automation

Melters are suitable for automated operation, with controlled feed of the solution medium, accurate mixing and continuous process monitoring. They are designed to produce liquor with a constant mass flow, dry substance content and temperature at all times.

Benefits

  • Consistent and reliable melting of different sugar products
  • Gentle processing thanks to accurate temperature control
  • Configuration for custom process parameters
  • U-shape trough design permits easy access to all compartments

Model sizes / variants / customisation

Melters from BMA are designed as U-shaped troughs, with diameters ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 mm and comprising between three and six compartments. The number of compartments is determined based on the process requirements in each case.
