The slurry mill developed by BMA uses grinding balls made from hardened steel. This ensures that sugar crystals are ground to a homogeneous slurry at the Lantic sugar refinery. Such a slurry with seeding crystals of a defined and carefully controlled size ensures consistent crystal growth during crystallisation and is therefore essential in obtaining sugar crystals of a high quality.
From grinding to maturation: the path sugar crystals take
Once the sugar crystals have passed through the mill, the slurry is fed into Lantic’s seed massecuite cooling crystalliser, where the seeding crystals mature under controlled conditions. In the next step, the sugar crystals reach their final shape in the batch pan. The homogeneous slurry quality produced in the mill creates the basis for an efficient and consistent crystallisation process, a key factor in obtaining a high-quality finished product at the Lantic sugar refinery.
Before the innovation – a study from BMA
Before these processes were implemented, BMA had prepared a comprehensive study on crystallisation for Lantic. The resulting recommendations were clear: use of a seed massecuite cooling crystalliser in combination with a slurry mill from BMA would increase the refinery’s efficiency, sugar yield and product quality.
